12:17 am - fast levels

I just got to level 5 in the first room of the dungeon by drinking from a fountain, scaring off the water moccasins with my drum, then zapping them with force bolt!

2:01 am - Dare I dream of ascension?

I've been playing Nethack on and off since 2001, never yet succeeding in
even getting to the Amulet, far less ascending. But yesterday I booted
up a random character, drawing a neutral gnomish Ranger, and... well.

Shall we say I got very lucky with three bones piles, such that even
after a /oCanx mishap with my first BoH I've still made it all the way
to the bottom?

I'm now back up to DLvl23, toting (as far as I know) everything I need
to win the game with me. But this is so much further than I've ever
reached before that I'm taking a breather, and hopping on here for some

I know there's a recommended ascension kit, but I've a feeling I may be
lacking some vital bits of it -- particularly after taking an unintended
dip in the moat around the vibrating square on my way back up which has
wrecked a lot of my scrolls. Never having made it to the Planes I'm a
little vague about ways and means there.

So I throw myself open to your tips and recommendations! Thanks in
advance from...

2:50 pm - Dammit.

Died on level 24, leveling up a bit before doing the quest. Everything was going fine--I had done a water prayer to get rid of some cursed boots, and then used it to bless my bag of holding and what I think were luckstones and some other stuff. Got through sokoban fine despite some early errors--and Rex behaved himself nicely, thanks for the advice on that. I also stashed a bunch of my stuff in throne rooms which helped with the burden there. After about four zoos and a leprechaun hall I had about 30k zorkmids stashed ... but anyway, let me get to the sad ending: I walked into a polymorph trap and turned into a fox. Kept my head and remembered that I'd change back when something killed me ... but that something turned out to be a purple worm, and I couldn't reequip fast enough to escape. In retrospect, I should have used the whistle to summon my bone demon as soon as it appeared. Oh well.

That was a really good one, too. :(

1:12 am - Game in progress ... wish me luck.

I'm having a good game. Level 11 lawful dwarven valkyrie with a pet bone demon, and I had a saddled pony too until it wandered into a zoo. Which is a shame, but I hadn't been riding it much anyway because I'm constantly burdened and that's dangerous. (What can I say? I'm a packrat. I kept the saddle just in case.) Being burdened isn't too big a deal with boots of speed, though, and while I'm on equipment, I should mention my shiny gauntlets of power which are great for slinging Mjollnir around. And I have Excalibur just in case it doesn't get back to my hand. I also have a good set of tools (unicorn horn, towel, can of grease, and magic whistle besides the basics). The only major thing I'm lacking is a good light source; I have one candle saved in case I need it, but that was the end of Izchak's stock. (He had no lamps for me, which is a bit annoying now that I even have some spare oil.)

I've finished the mines, including converting Minetown's altar without having to kill any authority figures personally and piss off Tyr. Gotta love that pet bone demon. I just saved at the beginning of Sokoban.. I'm praying that the bone demon doesn't go feral while I work on it, that would not be fun to deal with when I got back. (Should I bring him?)

12:06 pm - somewhat on topic

I'm giving SLASH'EM a try but I really hate the tileset. I've spoiled myself with the absurd 128x128 tiles for a long time in regular NH - is there a way to use that tileset for SLASH'EM?

Or, if not, can anyone recommend a decent-sized set that isn't 3D?

Well, my Wizard died today, on the Astral Plane. Nothing sucks more than being within sight of the end, Amulet in hand, and just not being cool enough. (maybe next time!)

This was the first Wizard I've run that didn't suck, but I'm still not very comfortable playing a non-fighter character. Throwing fireballs is pretty sweet, but man, I'd blow away in a stiff breeze.

2:38 pm - London roguelike meet

The next London roguelike meet will be at 14:00 on Saturday 28 July in the Pembury Tavern (http://www.individualpubs.co.uk/pembury/). We plan to (e)at, (q)uaff and #chat about roguelikes and related topics. Look for people who are either wearing NetHack T-shirts, or just looking generally geek-like.

[This was historically a rec.games.roguelike.nethack meet, but has since expanded its scope to be a general nattering about roguelikes; I'm crossposting the announcement here to see if there are any non-Usenet types who'd be interested in turning up.]

6:11 pm - YAAP

It's been a while since my last ascension (http://community.livejournal.com/nethackers/57541.html) but that's mainly due to not playing at all. I finally won with my original favorite character, the Valkyrie, and almost topped my last score ... but damn, this was my most difficult ascension thus far.

6:15 pm - I r newb.

Soo. Hi. I have a pretty funny story to tell about a long time ago when I was new to nethack. I'm kidding, this happened last month.

So, I was playing around, not really sure of what I was doing. I started polymorphing, got a baby white dragon, spider, and snake so that was interesting. Then.. I found the Sokoban level. Now at the time I had no idea what I was doing, so I just moved things around. I also thought that leaving and coming back would fix things. Not so much. Heh. Thinking you supposed to actually finish that puzzle (smart I'm not), I just let that character die. For the sixtieth time. Yeah, for some reason that character wouldn't die. I feel silly though, because I feel I could've done so many stupid things with an undying character.

Luckily I have found that spoiler page and now know that you don't really have to finish Sokoban, so that's good. I'm still not the best player ever but I'm learning. Maybe one day I'll get to dungeon level twenty..

10:11 am - Eulogy of a personal best.

  1 2557065 relsqui-Val-Hum-Fem-Law died in Gehennom on level 36
                [max 44]. Killed by a baluchitherium. - [242]

Figures. Two Wizards of Yendor and a master lich on the level, and the baluchitherium gets the kill.

Really it was my fault, though. I wasn't paying attention to my health--one of the Wizards stole the Orb of Fate, so I was taking about twice as much damage as I was used to. That's what I get for playing first thing in the morning, I guess.

To give you an idea of how good that game was for me, keep in mind that this was the first game in which I'd ever reached the quest level--much less received and finished the quest; killed Medusa; reached, entered, and cleared the Castle; killed Asmodeus, Juiblex, Baalzebub, and Orcus; and cleared the Tower and killed the Wizard of Yendor. (It shouldn't be terribly surprising that I used ten wishes over the course of this game.)

You know what's sad? There were TWO amulets of lifesaving in my inventory. The amulet (reflection) that I was wearing was cursed, though, so there's nothing I could have done about it.

Other highlights, cut for length.Collapse )

Finally, I think it's worth noting that I started this Nethack game almost a year ago. Obviously most of that time was not actually spent playing it; it was spent being frustrated (e.g. not knowing how to get across the Medusa level) or nervous (afraid of screwing up my best game ever). Eventually I found the balls to play it, though, so I have that to be proud of regardless of how stupid my death was.

Now, to start another game . . .

10:23 pm - Another Silly Death

An absolutely great game with a Barbarian, just playing Sokoban. Then... A barrow wight with a wand of death. Oh, you might say, I'm wearing an amulet of life saving, so no problem? Wrong! The ray bounces back from the wall a couple of steps behind me and strikes me a second time...
